Styles of Hatha Yoga come in many variations with the same basic 'seed-postures' as a common link. Differences arise from variations on breath, sequence, motion, alignment and overall form. At Devi Yoga classes offer many different types of Hatha Yoga with the overall emphasis of integrating a serene mind, harmonious Spirit and powerfully healthy body.
All classes are 90 minutes unless stated otherwise.
Forrest Yoga
Forrest yoga was developed by Ana Forrest after 30 years of study. This is a vigorous and dynamic yoga class with focus on breathing. This method of yoga incorporates slow, sustained stretches, standing poses and core strenthening exercises. This style of yoga is gentle on the joints especially the neck and lower back.
Vinyasa Flow
These classes are a popular, evolving form of traditional Hatha yoga that focuses on integrating breath and movement, flowing from one posture to the next, with some held postures. The result is meditation in motion.
Iyengar
As taught in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar, which emphasizes precise physical alignment awareness. Props are often used to assist practice in order to deepen the experience of the postures.
Intro to Yoga
We highly recommend that students new to yoga take this foundation course when they begin their practice at Devi Yoga.
This introductory course is designed to help students explore the fundamentals of yoga. Students will create a foundation based upon breathing techniques, primary yoga postures and universal principles of alignment. Individual attention and hands-on adjustments give students the necessary tools to progress to our ongoing classes. People of every fitness level, from the tri-athlete to the sedentary individual can participate.
Each student is accepted and encouraged at whichever stage they are. The mental, physical, emotional and health benefits of yoga are unparalleled by any other type of western exercise. Let this 5000 year-old practice work its magic on you.
Sunrise Yoga
(75 minutes) Awaken body and breath with a moderate-paced, flowing set of sun-salutations and asanas designed to wake you up and energize you in preparation of the day.
Restorative Yoga
This calming, therapeutic class uses props to support the body in order to deepen the benefits of poses. Both soothing and nurturing, this class promotes the effects of conscious relaxation. An opportunity to be still, relax, and let go!
Yin and Vinyasa
Combination class ? the 45 minutes a soft vinyasa the get the yang energy flowing. The second half is a yin practice taken from the Taoist tradition consisting of passive poses held for a time to balance the subtle energy body and create mindfulness.
Meditation
Meditation is a practice which watches the flow of breath and thoughts while in a seated posture. Each class will include instruction, group questions and sharing. Recommended for all levels as a perfect adjunct to a yoga asana practice.
Gentle Yoga
For those who like a gentle class utilizing restorative poses to relax and stretch. Great for those recuperating from injuries and trauma or for those simply needing to relax. The 75-minute class will focus on guided meditations, breath and movements to help release stress and to help free the body of deeply held trauma. The class will also provide the tools to assist with the student's own healing. Great for seniors, people with injuries and/or physical limitations.
Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti Yoga is a is a vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness. Jivamukti is a challenging form of yoga taught in a vinyasa style. Each class focuses on a theme, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to scriptural texts, a blend of yogic and modern music (from the Beatles to hip hop), spoken word, asana sequencing and yogic breathing practices. Classes are based on five key tenets which include ancient and modern scripture such as the Bhagavad Gita and Ghandi; bhakti (devotion); ahimsa (non-harming); uplifting music; and the tranquility of meditation. One of the nine internationally recognized forms of yoga, the name Jivamukti (pronounced Jee-va-mook-tee), is taken from the Sanskrit word jivan ~ individual soul / and mukti ~ meaning liberation while still living in the body. The goal of the practice is to help students attain their fullest potential in every sense - physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional.
Family Yoga
These classes are designed for children (4 and older) and their parents (or caregivers) to attend together in a fun and creative environment.
Family Yoga is a combined class of yoga stretches and creative tools to ignite joy and health to all family members. Quality time together doing something healthy, fun and creative is a fabulous way to unwind, connect, and deepen relations.
Yogilates
Yogilates is designed to integrate the Pilates methodology into the
practice of hatha yoga for a more complete system of exercise. The
goal of our Yogilates classes is to assist you in creating a lean and
balanced musculature that is strong, yet flexible.
